Narbonne
Narbonne has a full selection of restaurants, bars, shops and is renowned for its 12th century Cathar fort /Cathedral, extensive Roman historical sites and artefacts, and the Canal de la Robine which winds its way through the center of the town. During the summer months, the public areas alongside the canal have a continuous schedule of markets, festivals and music events. (Full listings of these can be obtained from the Narbonne tourist office).
The coast
Aprox 20 minutes drive south of Narbonne is Narbonne plage - an almost endless fine-sand beach, with several summer-time restaurant operations right on the beach offering fine food, sun beds, cocktails etc.
The drive from Narbonne to the beach takes you over a hilly area known as 'La Clappe', this being one of the best known wine 'denominations' in the area, again with plenty of wine makers offering free tastings of their produce.
There is also a good beach along with fine seafood restaurants at Gruissan, aprox the same distance from Narbonne.
Inland
Heading inland from St.Marcel, you have the area known as the 'Minervois', another good hunting ground for that special bottle of wine ! Additionally, there is the breathtaking village (small town) of Minerve, well woth a visit. It was
built by the Romans on a large outcrop of rock right in the middle of a huge ravine, it is not a ruin but a living village, with several restaurants / eateries and the surrounding countryside is a walkers paradise.
The Canal du Midi, which passes right by St.Marcel, is also a lovely site to walk and explore. There are picturesque villages all along its length, most with restaurants or bars on the canal, and in the summer months a lively flow of barges and canal boat traffic.
